The Ruger XGI was an attempt by Ruger to create a competitor to the Springfield Armory's then-surplus M1A rifles, by up-scaling their proprietary Mini-14 rifle. Ultimately, Ruger made perhaps a couple hundred examples of the XGI, none of which were sold commercially. The low production count is claimed to be a result from cracked receivers during testing of the rifles. Whether or not this was the case, or if Ruger simply couldn't compete with Springfield's relatively low-cost rifles is up for debate.
